14. On the beach at Unawatuna

Unawatuna
We are now about 100 miles south of Colombo in this small coastal town that is a popular beach resort one of the best dive sites in Sri Lanka.

Today, everything is back to normal after the the huge tsunami in 2004 that destroyed the town and killed 30,000 people along the coast, including 1,700 passengers on a train enroute from Colombo.

We will be here for about ten days and plan to take a walk along the deserted beach every morning.

Local fisherman pull their boats up the beach

The town has dozens of hostels, guests houses, and small hotels. We found some hidden gems

Leafy Lane

Beachside Cabanas

View from our hotel balcony
We overlooked a collection of houses clustered beneath the palm trees at the back of the hotel.

Large roofs almost overlapping each other.

Woodapples
When the Chef appeared holding a basketful of cricket balls we were confused when he asked:
'Would you like to try one?'
They weren't cricket balls but an Asian fruit that we had never heard of.
The hard shell has to be cracked open to reveal a sticky brown pulp with a taste similar to raisins.

Fresh fish for dinner on the beach
At night, the dozens of bars, cafes and restaurants that line the beach set up their tables and chairs on the sand, light candles and the whole place comes alive. Locally caught fresh fish are displayed on crushed ice, smoke rises from BBQ's and it's hard to choose where to have dinner.

William filmed the restaurant where we dined on our our first evening.
